ENERGY

Housing is an opportunity to produce renewable energy in the same place it will be used.

Energy production at affordable housing properties can lower utility costs for both the property owner and residents by directly offsetting electricity usage, reducing the amount of energy that needs to be purchased from the utility. Energy projects can improve development feasibility by allowing for leveraging and stacking of affordable housing and sustainability-focused funding programs. Significant funding is available to support renewable energy projects that benefit low income housing residents. These sustainability projects can be financially feasible with little or zero out of pocket costs for the property owner.

Front Door Development is experienced in assessing feasibility, securing financing, and managing the installation of housing oriented renewable energy projects. Renewable energy opportunities exist for both new construction housing and existing buildings.

Energy projects are ideally paired with building energy efficiency strategies such as improved insulation and air sealing. Use of electric appliances, in addition to executing an energy efficiency strategy and use of renewable energy can allow a property to be “net zero”, producing all the energy it needs and drastically reducing operating costs. Projects can leverage reduced operating costs to fund other aspects of the property.
